Across the vast inky night of space, in another part of the galaxy, a civilization flourished, unparallelled in the history of time. The product of centuries of social evolution, the culture was a shining reflection of classic Greco-Roman democracy and justice, a marvelous plexus of ancient customs and advanced science. Feeding on the fruits of their world, this cyber-society developed to the peak of perfection.

But within this brilliant race, there seethed a dark hunger ...

Genesis: The Legend of Zor

Mini-series / March 1992 - January 1993 / Story by Jason & John Waltrip

THE LOWDOWN

Before a massive 1200 meter alien warship crashed into a small island called Macross, there was a young scientist named Zor, an optimistic youth with a theory on how to help a growing energy crisis on his homeworld of Tirol. Zor had a theory that somehow he could tap into the bio-energy existing in living cells and use it to power the technology of everyday life. While young Zor found himself accepted to join the crew of a techno-voyage to the stars in search of a means of keeping the planet alive, manipulative senator Nimmul began his push to build an empire with himself in charge. Aiding in his push was be Zor's eventual discovery during his voyage: a plant that would come to be called the Flower of Life, the primary catalyst in the production of the mysterious power source he would name Protoculture ...

BACKGROUND INFO

The first specifically non-Sentinels ROBOTECH title published by Eternity Comics, Legend of Zor was also the only full-color title published by Eternity and the first series that Jason & John Waltrip wrote by themselves. Perhaps it is for this reason that the story seemed in some places to contradict previous information on the history of Tirol, Zor, the Invid, and the development of Protoculture. After all, at this point the Waltrips were still rather unfamiliar with Robotech outside of what they'd done on Sentinels. Based on the years presented in the series and the events depicted, it's not a great speculative leap to guess that they based the series entirely off of Jack McKinney's Robotech timeline, for lack of a better resource. Still, it is interesting to note that some of the ideas presented here are, to this day, still of merit in explaining some of the vague points in the complex relationship between the Invid, the Pollinators, the Flower of Life, and Zor himself.

Aside from flashbacks by Rem in the novel End of the Circle, Legend of Zor is the only full story in which Zor and what he did were addressed in the present tense (although his death is presented in at least three other formats--in the first Robotech novel Genesis, the Comico graphic novel of the same name, and the first issue of Return to Macross). Another series concerning the years following his death entitled Robotech Genesis: Invasion was planned, but was put on hold and never produced.

Each issue came with two uncut trading cards attached (stapled) to the interior of the comic. There are 24 cards in the complete set, but since there are only two cards per issue and there were six issues, the faithful ROBOTECH fan would have to purchase at least two copies of each issue to complete the set. These cards would reappear--actually cut into individual cards--as a supplement to the special edition of The Sentinels Book IV #0, each copy coming with one signed card.
