ROBOTECH II: The Sentinels - The Malcontent Uprisings

12 issue mini-series / August 1989 - December 1990 / Story by Bill Spangler
Based on ideas presented in the Robotech RPG and the Robotech novels by Jack McKinney

THE LOWDOWN

It is the year 2018. Macross City is but a memory. Khyron is long dead. Earth's two Super Dimensional Fortresses are rusting under the memorial mounds. Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes are busy with the construction of the SDF-3, the ship that will take them "to the stars". The First Robotech War is but a page in the history books ...

Well, for most it is. However, independent pockets of hostile Zentraedi forces equipped with hobbled-together mecha called Stingers remain scattered across the Earth, seeking revenge for their people. The years of battle with these ghosts of the Zentraedi Armada, the decade or so between the First Robotech War and the launch of the SDF-3, have come to be known as The Malcontent Uprisings. In this 12-issue series of the same name, we follow Max and Miriya Sterling as they, in their own seperate ways, work to end this ongoing conflict between human and Zentraedi--Max from the cockpit of his Veritech Fighter, and Miriya from within the most powerful of the Malcontent organizations, the Scavengers. Other characters who make some noise in this series include Jonathan Wolff and his Wolff Pack, defending Cavern City from renegade Zentraedi; Anatole Leonard and the growing Army of the Southern Cross, making life miserable for the RDF; and Breetai Tul, heading out on a top-secret solo mission to track down a former comerade he fears has turned traitor.

BACKGROUND INFO

The Malcontent Uprisings #2 The Malcontent Uprisings was the first Robotech mini-series, the first attempt at fleshing out the saga beyond the events of the original TV series and The Sentinels saga. It was also the first of many Bill Spangler-penned Robotech stories, most of them set pretty firmly into the framework of the Jack McKinney Robotech novels. (This is ironic, since McKinney later changed parts of the storyline and aspects of the mecha in the series when he adapted it into the novel The Zentraedi Rebellion, and would continue to mess with Spangler's ideas in the other two Lost Generation novels.) Ideas from the novels pop up in here all over the place, including a mention of McKinney's mysterious "Shapings of the Protoculture" in issue 7, the addition of Breetai's last name from the novels, and the depiction of Anatole Leonard and his Army of the Southern Cross as a gang of xenophobic extremists. What's most interesting is how Spangler has book passages, akin to those seen in the introduction to each chapter of the Robotech novels, in the back of almost every issue of Malcontents.
