You see the truth now, don't you, Micronians ... we are no ordinary fleet of Zentraedi! We were once the Robotech Masters' elite guard. Our deflection shield and cloaking devices are as unique as they are deadly! But it is my leadership and superior strategy that you must fear the most!!

Megastorm

Three-part regular story / March 1997 - July 1997 / Story by Fred Perry

THE LOWDOWN

Promo art for Megastorm by Ben Dunn On its way back to Earth from the fold jump that accidentally sent it just this side of Pluto, the SDF-1 approaches Jupiter. Unfortunately, the Zentraedi have called in reinforcements to ambush them there, led by former Elite Guard commander Kohrah. Equipped with cloaking devices and impervious barrier systems, these Zentraedi seem to be almost more than the Robotech Defense Force can handle. However, the RDF does have two aces up its sleeve--Skull Leader Roy Fokker and budding cadet Max Sterling. Can these two top-notch pilots save the SDF-1 from the gravity trap awaiting them over Jupiter?

BACKGROUND INFO

With two of the biggest guns at Antarctic Press working on it--Fred Perry handling the story end and Ben Dunn doing the artwork--you'd think Megastorm would be something special. However, with a plot borrowed from Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers in the U.S.), improbable new Zentraedi weaponry, a character involved who shouldn't even be there, Veritech equipment being used that hadn't been developed yet, names switched around and even misspelled, cardboard cutouts where the good ol' Macross Saga cast should be, and a villain that plays like warmed over Khyron, Megastorm ended up being just the first of many Antarctic Press disappointments.

The problem at the most basic level with Megastorm is that it plays more like a fan tribute rather than as a real story set within the context of The Macross Saga--either that, or a runaway RPG campaign. In either case, it just doesn't work. It makes some of the things Ben Dunn said about how Antarctic would handle Robotech prior to this story's release seem quite laughable, especially the part about Antarctic doing Robotech "right". On the contrary, Megastorm is the textbook example of how NOT to do Robotech right.
