The Robotech Style Guide was originally created by Harmony Gold as a guide for licensees to work from in the development of ROBOTECH-related product back in the mid '80s. Over the years, it has become something of a collector's item. In 1995, several were sold to fans at Robocon 10, the convention celebrating the tenth anniversary of the ROBOTECH TV series. This is not one of those copies. Since Robocon 10, I have it on good authority that most of the remaining copies of the Style Guide were destroyed by Harmony Gold--probably because of its error-filled nature and its more fantastical approach to certain concepts in the TV series, though I could be wrong--and that the one I now own was saved by a Harmony Gold employee and sold to a California import toy shop called Kimono My House, who happily sold the book to me in the summer of 2002 for a big wad o'cash.
I didn't buy this book for myself. I bought it for the rest of ROBOTECH fandom all the world over. With the aid of my trusty scanner and some free time I conjured up by not studying for my college classes, I have begun putting the contents of the Style Guide--the original error-riddled canon produced for the ROBOTECH TV series--on the internet for all the world to see, enjoy, and dissect.
A few things to bear in mind before delving into the Style Guide:
- With the exception of a few fixed spelling errors, each section below contains the entire unaltered text of that corresponding section of the actual Robotech Style Guide binder, complete with weird capitalizations and funny phrasiology. Each section also contains some commentary written by myself, pointing out errors and omissions that have warped people's conceptions of the workings of the ROBOTECH universe and have been perpetuated for years by various books and other merchandise.
- All images are scanned in at 100 DPI resolution, then reduced to 50% of their actual size. About half of the black & white artwork has non-repo blue color guides on it, which I decided to unilaterally scan in black & white so as to discourage people making off with the images. After all, who wants to steal pictures of Khyron with gray numbers and lines all over him? Also, the color pics have not been altered in any way--all the miscolorations are Harmony Gold's fault, not mine.
- Finally, all contents are copyright 1985 or '86 Harmony Gold U.S.A./Tatsunoko Pro. The contents of the Robotech Style Guide are presented here for informational and entertainment purposes only with no expectation of profit from this venture outside of a few pats on the back. If at any time I am contacted by the parties who created this volume and told to take this information down, I'll cave in like a good boy and delete all these files.
So, with this in mind, enjoy the ROBOTECH STYLE GUIDE!
