Roy Fokker, charismatic leader of the famed "Skull Squadron", and combat veteran of the recent global civil war which ravaged the Earth, enlists in the United Earth Government's Robotech Defense Force. His assignment: to defend the SDF-1 and its crew. Some time before, Roy, a famed air circus pilot, met and befriended young Rick Hunter, a promising young pilot. During Roy's training on the Veritech Fighter, he met and fell in love with Claudia Grant. In his relationship with Claudia and his fascination with the entire Robotech environment, Roy becomes a larger-than-life hero. His death in episode #18 is a real shock to the members of the Skull Squadron and the crew of the SDF-1, especially Claudia. Roy's dynamic presence is felt throughout many of the later episodes in flashback.

"During Roy's training on the Veritech Fighter, he met and fell in love with Claudia Grant.

In episode 33, "A Rainy Night", it is explained that Roy first met and tried to woo Claudia during the Global Civil War while both were assigned to the same military base. They did reunite during the development of the Veritech Fighter on Macross Island, but by then the groundwork for their relationship had been laid.
