An amateur pilot and close friend of Roy Fokker, Rick is exposed to the Robotech Odyssey when he visits Macross Island for the trial launching of the SDF-1. This historic launch is marred by the appearance of the alien Zentraedi Armada. Rick then becomes one of the major players in an intergalactic war which could determine the ultimate fate of the human race. Throughout the series, Rick is constantly struggling with his inner feelings in regard to his role as a combatant. At first he has to come to grips with the age-old fears of ascent to manhood and the meaning of courage. He does not approve of violence and his reluctant commission into the Robotech Defense Force is tainted with an underlying fear. After Roy's death, the mantle of responsibility falls on Rick's shoulders. Obsessed with proving himself as a courageous pilot, he is plagued by uncertainty. Rick's feelings are torn between Lynn Minmei, a young Chinese girl he rescues, and Lisa Hayes, his commanding officer. Rick subsequently goes through a series of changes which harden him and turn him into a moody and almost tragic figure.
