In the Attack Mode as seen on the previous page, the SDF-1 is a powerful weapons system. Its main guns are capable of destroying thousands of targets in a single energy blast. There is also a pin-point barrier system which is in effect when the ship is in the Attack Mode. A modification of this system itself becomes a weapon as the crew of the SDF-1 learns more about this mysterious vessel.
This example of Robotech Mecha has been redesigned by Earth based scientists to conform to normal height requirements for its human crew. Capable of traveling through hyper-space (and thus avoiding the lengthy periods of time required to move distances of many lightyears in a simple operation known as "space fold"). Hidden aboard this ship by its original designer (an ancient Robotech Master named Zor) is the highly prized protoculture factory which provides the basic energy source for the entire Robotech System.
Please note that on the actual page, as seen above, the second paragraph ends with the words "highly prized" and the remainder of the paragraph is grafted onto the end of the top paragraph. Quite the interesting typo, no?
"In the Attack Mode as seen on the previous page ..."
The image of the SDF-1's Attack Mode is actually on the FOLLOWING page.
"A modification of this Barrier System itself becomes a weapon as the crew of the SDF-1 learns more about this mysterious vessel."
This is kind of vaguely worded. I assume here they are referring to the Daedalus attack(first employed in episode 6, "Blitzkrieg"), which requires the Pin-Point Barriers to unite at the front end of the Daedalus submersible carrier (the SDF-1's right arm in its so-called Attack Mode) and act as a sort of energy shield to allow the carrier to be used as a battering ram. The Daedalus tears through the enemy vessels and opens up its front landing bay door to reveal hordes of Robotech mecha which then proceed to fire all of their missiles at the interior of the enemy ship. In this way, the RDF forces can destroy the enemy Zentraedi ships from the inside out.
Still, it's also possible, due to the fact that the word "Pin-Point" is omitted from this particular phrase, that this refers to the Omni-Directional Barrier's overload blast, which technically is not a weapon but is a side-effect of using the ship's Omni-Directional Barrier (first employed in episode 19, "Bursting Point") beyond its limitations. In a battle with Khyron, the Barrier was pushed beyond its limits and ended up overloading, causing a massive explosion which blew up a large chunk of the Canadian landscape. Dolza, Supreme Ruler of the Zentraedi, mistook this for a weapon and some evidence points to an effect like this contributing to the destruction of his flagship in episode 27, "Force of Arms". The problem with the above passage referring to this is that by all appearances the Omni-Directional Barrier is unrelated to the Pin-Point Barrier (it says it's talking about a "modification of" the Pin-Point Barrier) except that both are used to defend the SDF-1 from enemy attacks--the Pin-Point Barrier was created by Dr. Lang in "Blitzkrieg" from a strange residual energy that appeared after the disappearance of the SDF-1's fold system, while the Omni-Directional Barrier is a reconstructed element of the SDF-1's standard defense systems (the Robotech Masters referred to it in episode 29, "The Robotech Masters", so naturally it had to have come standard).
Despite the ambiguity, it's much more likely that this is a reference to the Daedalus attack, but considering the source it could easily be referring to the latter.
"Hidden aboard this ship by its original designer (an ancient Robotech Master named Zor) is the highly prized protoculture factory ..."
This statement directly links the design of the SDF-1 to Zor, which is never done in the TV series; while the ship is referred to as "Zor's Battlefortress" in episode 1, "Boobytrap", and other subsequent episodes, all that does is indicate his former possession of the vessel. Also interesting is that this seems to imply that the Protoculture Factory came standard on the SDF-1.
