Lisa Hayes - pages 1-8 to 1-10

Lisa Hayes

Rank: Lt. Commander
Age: 24

Lisa, daughter of Admiral Hayes, could have been assigned any position in the United Earth Defense Forces. After her fiancee, Karl Riber, decided to request duty on Mars Base Sara to avoid becoming involved in the Global Civil War, Lisa joins the Space Corps to eventually join up with her lifelong friend. The coming of the alien space battle fortress changes these plans and Lisa is assigned to the position of First Officer aboard the SDF-1, in charge of all ship operations. Devoting all her energy to her work, Lisa unhappily discovers that Karl Riber, along with the rest of the personnel on Mars Base Sara, have been murdered by the aliens as they made their way to Earth. Lisa throws herself even deeper into her work, almost oblivious to the men around her. Eventually, Lisa becomes involved with Rick Hunter in a rocky romance filled with missed opportunities and endless complications. Lisa's commitment to lasting peace forces her to reject commission on the SDF-1 and join her father at the repository of the Earth's Robotechnology. Her struggle forms one of the main elements of the entire Robotech Saga.

"... Lisa unhappily discovers that Karl Riber, along with the rest of the personnel on Mars Base Sara, have been murdered by the aliens as they made their way to Earth."

The misconception that the Zentraedi destroyed Sara Base has been perpetuated for years by materials as old as the Palladium Books ROBOTECH Role Playing Game and as recent as Greg Lane's 1998 comic book series "Covert Ops", and likely originated right here. The truth, however, is revealed through this exchange from the very beginning of episode 7 of the TV series, "Bye Bye Mars":

Breetai: It would appear the Earth people have abandoned this post.

Exedore: Most of the inhabitants, sir, were destroyed in a battle with their allied forces, and the few that survived were unable to escape.

In other words, other humans killed the crew of Sara Base. SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS continuity says that anti-unificationists killed most of the crew as they were trying to escape , which is why the base is so immaculately intact despite the bloodshed.

While this is a rather simple error, I can't shake the feeling that the Zentraedi are blamed here because the ROBOTECH version of events makes out the years of 1999 to 2009 (the period during which the attack on Sara takes place) to be a time of relative calm, wheras the original MACROSS continuity places a series of localized Unification Wars during this period.
