Sean Phillips - pages 2-5 to 2-7

Sean Phillips

Rank: Private
Age: 23

Formerly a First Lieutenant, Sean Phillips was demoted to the rank of private because of his wolfish advances to a female superior officer. Excitingly good-looking and slightly aristocratic in his outlook, Sean is a ladies' man with more moves than Harry Houdini. All this boyishness aside, Sean is an excellent combat soldier. He pilots his Veritech Hover Craft with ease and assurance. He eventually falls in love with Marie Crystal. His difficulty in adjusting to the fact that he must be ordered around by Dana Sterling, once a Sergeant under his command in the A.T.A.C., is an ironic part of his life in the 15th Tactical Squad.

"Formerly a First Lieutenant ...

Though proper ranks in the ROBOTECH TV series are hard to peg down due to the confusing and sometimes self-contradictory translation issued by Tatsunoko and used by Harmony Gold, the only rank or title attached to Sean in the TV series prior to his demotion is "Captain". Not necessarily contradicting the Style Guide here, just pointing this out.

"... because of his wolfish advances to a female superior officer."

This is PROBABLY the action that got him demoted to the rank of Private, but somehow the TV series makes it unclear in a couple of ways:

  1. Dana jokingly asks Sean if he made a pass at a general's wife when he is being taken into his cell. Of course, this is just a random guess by Dana--an educated guess to be sure, but random, and probably not the actual offense he's being hauled away for.
  2. Sean is being returned to solitary when Dana is released. What one needs to realize about this scene is that, for one reason or another, the ROBOTECH episode "False Start" is rearranged from the original Japanese program. The footage of Dana imprisoned and let out and Sean being taken to his cell is actually from the very beginning of the SUPER DIMENSION CAVALRY SOUTHERN CROSS episode, "Prisoner". When the members of the 15th are talking about Sean being locked away at the beginning of "False Start", it was this instance they were originally referring to; the scene originally immediately followed Sean's imprisonment. However, having him brought in AFTER the reference muddies things; so what, he was let go and then he harassed ANOTHER cute girl with military ties who resisted his charms? Geez, how dumb can someone be ... oh wait, this is Sean. I guess it IS possible ...
"His difficulty in adjusting to the fact that he must be ordered around by Dana Sterling, once a Sergeant under his command ..."

While I've not watched the early episodes of the Masters segment of the ROBOTECH TV series in a while, I believe there are moments where Dana is actually referred to as a Sergeant. However, in her first appearance in "False Start", the first full episode of the Robotech Masters portion of the ROBOTECH TV series, Dana is referred to in her first appearance as "the cutest Second Lieutenant in the Tactical Armored Corps". This is not to say that she was never a Sergeant under his command, but rather that the TV series is inconclusive in supporting this statement.
