NEWS & UPDATES - 12.02.2002

As a reminder to everyone Wildstorm's ROBOTECH #0 comes out on Wednesday. Rest assured, that night there will be a synopsis and analysis on it right here! I can't wait to sink my claws into some new material after this stupid nearly four-year drought ...

Speaking of the new Wildstorm ROBOTECH line, here's a new article from Newsarama about the new title that lets loose a few more tidbits about the storyline, including one big and surprising one. Check it out.

Haven't had much time to pick apart ROBOTECH continuity lately, so the updates have been kinda few and far-between. I did some updating on the entry for Genesis: The Legend of Zor #1 since I got my hands on a copy of the special limited edition of the book. There's some neat bonus material worth checking out to look at. ROBOTECH issues that recieved full entries this update include Legend of Zor #4, The Malcontent Uprisings #1, and Return to Macross #22.

I bought a copy of Mecharider #1 a couple of months back. As I said in my last update, it's a MegaZone 23 rip-off comic from 1994, written by Bill Spangler and drawn, surprisingly, by Malcontent Uprisings and Covert Ops artist Gregory Lane. Even more surprisingly, the book was "created" by Lowell Cunningham, the man who also created the Men In Black--yes, the same ones from the movies. Apparently he started up a comic book company for a few months to produce his MZ23 rip-off comic (and give Bill Spangler a job while Academy was setting up shop for ROBOTECH's return) and bring back the MiB following the shake-ups at Malibu Comics. While Mecharider is really nothing to write home about, it's not awful. It just feels like the first episode of some very generic motorcycle mecha show, kinda like Zillion.

(And BTW, it was actually fashionable to rip off anime mecha designs in the '90s for comics, even in the mainstream. I recently saw an old issue of Marvel Comics Presents with rip-off Votoms. Look!)

Oh, and I've updated the appendicies in preparation for the new book. The Timeline's been tweaked a bit, and a lot of misinformation on the part of the publishers has been ironed out of the Full Release List thanks to a lovely site called ComicsList.com, which has lists of what actually came out in stores from 1992 onward.

If I find the time, there should be some more new stuff (BESIDES the Wildstorm ROBOTECH #0 entry) up on the site on Wednesday. If not ... well, I guess you'll have to wait a couple of weeks until ROBOTECH #1 for new material.

As always, e-mail any questions & comments to me at scwonkey@hotmail.com. See you at the next update!

  • Believe it or not, there were no ROBOTECH comics published ten years ago this month. Instead, check out Steve Skroce's variant cover for ROBOTECH #1, coming out this month!
